We are open to any graduate student (MS, MA, PhD) in psychology, social work, counseling, or other related field. We generally only help undergraduate psychology majors (but hopefully we&#8217;ll change that in the future as we continue to grow!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>To get started as a mentor, please fill out this form: <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/kwF4dt9yeFrBKmdo9\">https:\/\/forms.gle\/kwF4dt9yeFrBKmdo9<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mentee load<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Generally people take 1, 2, or 3 mentees at a time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We never assign more than 3 mentees to a single mentor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Time commitment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some mentees like to meet once and feel okay<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some mentees meet more frequently (no more than once a week)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some mentees require multiple semesters, some require just one<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When we match, we will do our best to get a sense of how often they\u2019d like to meet and let you know\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We will ask about your commitment ability as well<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Things you\u2019ll help with<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Grad school how-to (you know this, you\u2019ve gotten in)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Writing statements of purpose<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finding programs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Taking GREs &amp; studying<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Time-management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Organizational skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Googling things you don\u2019t know<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Providing resources to your mentee (we have a google drive full of these!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Navigating tough conversations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Setting realistic goals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Formatting CVs\/Resumes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you\u2019ll gain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mentoring experience\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mentees with different backgrounds, perspectives, and interests<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Helping mentee through different stages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most jobs require mentoring in some way (teaching, research assistants, clients, new hires, etc.)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mentoring NOW can help you build those skills for later!\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some further reading:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mentorloop.com\/blog\/benefits-of-being-a-mentor\/\">https:\/\/mentorloop.com\/blog\/benefits-of-being-a-mentor\/<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indeed.com\/career-advice\/career-development\/why-is-a-mentor-important\">https:\/\/www.indeed.com\/career-advice\/career-development\/why-is-a-mentor-important<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK552775\/\">https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK552775\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sense of satisfaction\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Especially when student gets into grad school<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But also when you answer their questions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be better at finding resources\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Will have to adjust skills (like googling) to fit your mentee\u2019s needs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Boundary setting\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We like to keep the onus on the mentee<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This will help you maintain boundaries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mentoring style development\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What you want\/need\/expect from a mentee<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What you\u2019ll provide vs what they need to do<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Skills &amp; practice in navigating difficult conversations\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Low GPAs, low GRE scores, little experience<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gap year considerations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other program considerations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Knowledge of different programs\/jobs\/opportunities\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Helps you be a well-rounded mentor who can help multiple people<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Good for general advising<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Access to resources\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How to mentor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Resources to share with mentees<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sense of confidence\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Will realize you know more than your mentee<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gives you confidence to mentor effectively<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Helps with imposter syndrome<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Friends!
