Grad school requires a lot more than a good GPA. Try gaining some experience! It will help build your resume as well as help you explore your interests! Consider the following:

  • Research assistantships in a lab who does research that interests you.
    • Through a lab, you may have opportunities to attend conferences like Rocky Mountain Psychological Association
    • You may also have independent research opportunities
    • You will also have contact with either a PI or graduate student – build rapport with them!
    • Check out the postings on the site above, or reach out to professors whose research you are interested in – the worst they can say is “no”!
  • Teaching assistantships in a class you did particularly well in – reach out to the professor to see if they’re taking TAs soon!
    • TAships will help you build rapport with faculty who may eventually be able to write you a robust letter of recommendation.
  • Volunteer experience in something that interests you
  • Presenting at/attending CURC or MURALS
  • Pursuing relevant internships
  • Joining organizations like Psi Chi
  • Working with your psych advising team to understand different options (make sure you have access to their Canvas page and check it often for updates!)

Through avenues like those above, you can begin to create a network of mentors and peers. Instead of relying on one person to guide you, those responsibilities are diffused across many individuals. This network can also provide varying perspectives and advice for you to consider when deciding what you would like to do after undergrad. Then, once you’re in your third/fourth/fifth+ year, you can come to MUGSS where we can help you with the application process!
